A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion. Proverbs 18:2
The only way we can really understand our brothers and sisters is by actually listening to them. It’s very important to our relationships that we are not just thinking about our reply when someone else is talking. Maybe it’s a simple topic, maybe it’s something more important. Maybe we are more interested in judging motives or in a good debate rather than really trying to understand the other person’s point of view.
If it doesn’t actually bring you pleasure to understand the other person, there is something wrong. If you are only concerned about expressing yourself and what you want the other person to understand about you, you are a fool. Strong vocabulary, but important to note. Clearly the Lord does not think relationships are supposed to be one way. Thankfully He has shown us so much grace in our own relationships with Him. May we extend that grace to others and strive to be people who take pleasure in understanding our fellow believers.
