When trying to write about the love of God I think of the words of John when he said, “there are many other things that Jesus did. If they were all written down one by one, I suppose that the whole world could not hold the books that would be written.” (John 21:25)
The Bible records many wonderful things that God did in His love for us, especially through His Son Jesus Christ. But it records very little compared to what could be written about God’s love. God says the world could not contain the books that can be written about His love to us.
The love of God is greater far, Than tongue or pen can ever tell.
It goes beyond the highest star, And reaches to the lowest hell.
The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled, And pardoned from his sin.
O love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure— The saints’ and angels’ song.
Could we with ink the ocean fill, And were the skies of parchment made;
Were every stalk on earth a quill, And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above, Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole, Though stretched from sky to sky.(1)
God’s love is not like a physical relationship. A physical relationship is enjoyed for a moment. God’s love is eternal. What is the love of God like?
To understand the love of God you have to get to know him. The most famous verse in the Bible says; “For God so loved the world…” (John 3:16) God’s love is so big that He can love the whole world and everyone in it, past, present, and future!
You see, God wants us to know him, so he puts His love within our hearts. God reveals his love to all mankind. He wants all of us to know Him and know that He loves us, unconditionally, just as we are.
God took the first step
God did not wait for us to come to him. A good parent does not wait for their children to come to them for food, water, or sleep. They prepare these things beforehand because they love their children.
God knew that we would not want to come to him. He is pure and holy and we are wretched and sinful; so we would have no desire to see him, let alone come near him. But God, in His wonderful love prepared for us beforehand a way to be saved. He came to this earth in His Son the Lord Jesus, to draw all mankind to Himself. (John 12:32)
Our desperate need
Man cannot come to God without help. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6) Because man won’t and can’t come to God on their own, He sent His Son, the Lord Jesus, to die on the cross for our sin. Our sin is removed and a way is provided.
God’s love is not dependent on me loving Him. I can’t love God without Him first loving me. The Bible says that Christ loved me and gave Himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)
Have you come to God and gotten to know Him? He’s reaching out to you. He’s waiting for you to get to know Him. Will you acknowledge that God, in His love, is drawing you to Him through the Lord Jesus? He wants to forgive your sin, and bring you to Himself. Will you let Him?
“But as many as received him, to them gave He power to become the children of God, even to them that believe on his name:” (John 1:12)
Come to the Savior, make no delay – Here in His Word He’s shown us the way;
Here in our midst He’s standing today, Tenderly saying, “Come!”
Joyful, joyful will the meeting be, When from sin our hearts are pure and free,
And we shall gather, Savior, with Thee, In our eternal home.
“Suffer the children!” O hear His voice, Let every heart leap forth and rejoice,
And let us freely make Him our choice: Do not delay, but come.
Think once again, He’s with us today – Heed now His blest commands, and obey;
Hear now His accents tenderly say, “Will you, my children, come? (2)
Will You come to Jesus and be saved today?
